Yarbrough (born Calvin Yarbrough) & Peoples (born Alisa Peoples) were an R&B duo from Dallas, Texas. Calvin and Alisa met when they were children. They both took lessons from the same music teacher and attended the same neighborhood church where they both sang solos in the church choir. After their college years, Alisa worked a regular job while Calvin played keyboards & sang in a band called Grand Theft. Musicians Robert, Ronnie, and Charlie Wilson (who would later be known as the Gap Band) were in the audience for one of Grand Theft's shows and offered Calvin a job as a background vocalist on the Leon Russell tour they were a part of. Once the tour ended, Calvin returned back to Dallas and played local gigs with Grand Theft.
Around 1977, Alisa sang a song with the band during one of their club dates. In 1977, the Wilson brothers joined Total Experience Records as the Gap Band & went to Dallas to perform a concert. Later that evening as they were winding down after the show, they caught Calvin and Alisa performing and as a result, Total Experience Records owner, Lonnie Simmons invited them to Los Angeles where they began playing in clubs around Southern California.
Two years later, the duo signed to Total Experience Records. The last single from the album, 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' peaked at #46 on Billboard's Hot Black Singles chart, staying on the chart for 9 weeks. After that, Calvin and Alisa left Total Experience Records and got married the following year. They returned to Dallas and started their own music production company called Yarbrough & Peoples Productions and they continue to write & produce music, perform concerts and mentor other gifted newcomers. Most recently in 2009, they appeared in the off-Broadway musical, 'Blind Lemon Blues' at the York Theatre in New York where Calvin portrayed the role of Lead Belly. Career Cavin Leon Yarbrough (born January 22, 1954) and Alisa Delois Peoples (born June 29, 1957) both grew up in, Texas, having known each other since they were young children, as they had met taking piano lessons, after which they remained friends throughout their childhoods. In the mid `70s Yarbrough was on tour in the band of and met the Wilson Brothers, who would go on to form. Upon returning to Dallas some months later, the twosome started the band Grand Theft, both as featured keyboardists as well as vocalists.
In 1977, the Wilson Brothers had just joined as the Gap Band and went down to Dallas to perform a concert. Later that night, trying to unwind after the show, the Wilsons caught the twosome's act, and as a result, invited the couple to Los Angeles where they began playing in clubs around Southern California.
Two years later, they signed their own recording contract with Total Experience and recorded and released their debut album,. Which contained ',' topping the chart in early 1981, knocking their label-mate's song ' out of the top spot. The song went on to chart higher on the than any of the other songs released on the label up to that time. In addition, the corresponding album went and peaked at #16 in the album chart. Across the pond in Europe, the release of the song reached #7 in the and was also certified Gold. The duo continued on with its R&B success throughout the 1980s, with four more R&B hits entitled 'Heartbeats' (R&B #10 in 1983), ' (Pop #48, R&B #1 in 1984; #60 UK), 'Guilty' (R&B #2 in 1986; #53 UK), and 'I Wouldn't Lie' (R&B #6 in 1986; #61 UK), all of which brought the band success.
After Guilty, their final album for Total Experience, Yarbrough and Peoples left the label in 1986. They married in on January 18, 1987, and tiring of the Southern California grind, returned to their hometown of Dallas and started their own music production company, Yarbrough & Peoples Productions. Today, they continue to write, produce and perform concerts, mentor other gifted newcomers, and otherwise continue to leave their indelible stamp on the music industry. In 2009, they both appeared in the musical, Blind Lemon Blues, at the York Theatre, where Cavin Yarbrough portrayed.
